An account of yesterday's trek.
BilliKall Rangaswamy betta is close to Kanakpura. A tall mountain. 5 of us set out....Partha - my colleague, UdayShankar - 61 years - a veteran trekker, Swamy - 50 yrs - lead the group and Sharmila - 35yrs mother to a 10 & 7 yr kids
After bus and auto, breakfast and packed lunch on the way, reached a village and started the trek. First to greet me were a blue kingfisher, an Indian Roller & a Dronga. And, yes Wild-fires....forest fires.. Soon it was a suspicious owl which kept jumping from branch to branch seeing me. This walk alonga stream was too good....lotz of birds.....a few lambani boyz kept begging & following me.
Then the climb started.....nice climb...saw lotz of birds on the way...sound of the fire...smoke..amazing bird calls...Sharmila was clearly struggling...Partha & me stayed with her in turns...After close to 4 hrs we reached the top. Relaxed for an hour, had lunch and started back. A small pond had an interesting frog...spotted....and the lake view is from here.
It was to be an 1 hour max decent.....I was climbing down like a dream..a bea-eater kept posing for me. Amazing. Suddenly....realised something wrong with the crowd up...no sign of them....climbed back...found Sharmila in major pain...ankle twisted....and she was crawling. We had climbed down just 15%. The old man was ahead...and Swamy left saying he will makr arrangments to get an auto to the base of the hill.
So...it was Partha & me for the next 4 hours....getting this lady....who was hopping on one leg.....Phew....what an experience....lot of distracting talk....family...love...trekking....office...etc etcBoth of us were supporting her she held our shoulders and kept hopping.....it was real tough for her....for sometime we carried her on our hands....we did this as kids remember...the arms locked....and she sat...the sweaty hands were slipping....and it was more tiresome.
So..hop..hop...itz 5:15...85% covered....shez can't hop anymore....thanfully Swamy sent up a tractor driver...an young chap...so now with 3 of us....we decided to carry her down.....we lifted her up her legs wereon my shoulders.......the other two supported her back on their shoulders.......and we climbed down....lot of weight...with slipping stones..lot of momentum...the guyz behind sometimes couldn't see where they were stepping....risky....but we pulled this off...with many stops.
By 6, we reached the base...what an adventure...Partha & me had done the half-marathon together....and that was the most tough thing until this happened.
Sure...she will go on to be one of my close friends.
And...to all those who promised and ditched.....some strong untypable words.
Have a nice week.
Bye, Akash
